Hi Kathy - I had high potassium a while back. It was picked up my GP and also the specialist rheumatology nurse and they rang me and of course I got a rather worried as I'd only just started taking MTX. Anyway they advised tweaking my meds a bit, and eventually it settled back down and the conclusion was that it had been caused by my blood pressure tablets being changed.
In your case, the best thing is to discuss it with your specialist nurse - do you have a helpline at the hospital? Do you keep a record of your blood test results? I have a little blue book and ask the phlebotomist for my last results each time I go to have my bloods done - that way I have become familiar with what my scores are normally like. Potassium isn't one of the key indicators, so I had to ask specially about that one for a few months.
Anyway these numbers may not mean much at the moment but these were my scores over those few weeks
3.0 - very low - GP rang me!
4.1 - extra blood test, much better after I took advice about tweaking blood pressure medications and MTX
3.7 - weekly blood tests - dropped again - more phone calls
4.0 - better -
3.6 - OK - just
4.1 - OK
3.6 - starting to become normal for me
3.6 - seems to be more or less consistent for me!
So you can see that the scores do vary at the best of times, but when they fall outside the recommended range then that's when the GP gets an alert and rings you up.
Best wishes - Sylvia
